Ok…. I just saw the McDonald’s commercial that uses the statement, “Maybe you’re adopted!” for food products that don’t look alike. It isn’t exactly offensive, but bothers me in some ‘adoptive parent’ way.

The stunned pause following the statement “Maybe you’re adopted” feels like a “gotcha” or that adoption is shocking or bad. The statement also promotes the myth of secrecy. Why wouldn’t he be aware he was adopted? The comment also crosses the line of privacy. The entire commercial is inane — unhealthy “food,” silly concept, and then the adoption remark.
